Meet our talented knit designer Lisa Craig

We are very excited to launch our brand new PERRIAM knitting patterns & kits this week!

Each pattern has been designed and written by the extremely talented local knit designer Lisa Craig from Lisa F Design. We feel very lucky to be able to collaborate with such a talented local.

We sat down with Lisa to ask a few questions about her amazing craft.

How long have you been involved in the knitting world?

I started knitting when I was around 7, studied Textile Design in Wellington and from there worked for Feltex Yarns which produced Crucci and Shepherd yarns. I have continued to design knitting patterns since then, so it’s been a while.

What sparked your interesting into the knitting?

As a child I watched my grandmothers, mother and aunties knitting and I had to do it too, I loved the process of creating something out of a ball of yarn.

Can you describe the process you go through to bring a knitting pattern to life?

I come up with a concept, knit a swatch and draw an outline of the idea. The next stage is writing the pattern and knitting up the sample garment…. testing and checking the pattern.

Finally photography.

What are your thoughts on the renaissance knitting seems to be having recently?

Those who love knitting have always been knitting but there are new knitters taking up the craft and wanting to create something unique and different… knitting is a great way to channel your creativity and social media is a great influencer for creative inspiration.

What makes a great knitting pattern for you?

A great knitting pattern to me is something with a twist to spark your interest and one that is easy to read and knit.

What projects do you find the most exciting to work on?

At the moment I love lace and texture and how you can work the details in to a pattern. What is most exciting is something that challenges me to be creative.

What qualities do you look for in a knitting yarn?

I look for natural fibre with a story behind the yarn, where it’s from and who made it is important to me.

Do you have a favourite from our new PERRIAM knitting patterns you have designed for us?

My favourite is Jemima the Lamb and how a concept drawing became a neat toy.

And lastly where do you see the future of knitting?

Knitting is a classic and timeless hobby that will always be here, it gives us a chance to slow down and create beautiful pieces to wear and enjoy. Creating something that is sustainable, ethical and easy on the earth is the future.

Lisa can you please consider making the cardigans for bigger sizes. Maybe up to 3yrs. Would love to knit my small granddaughter a cardy for summer. She is two. Have done the popcorn jersey and 6 different hats. Can’t wait for new wool.
